Jean Prouvé (1901 - 1984) was a French architect and designer.
After an apprenticeship as a cafts locksmith, he opened his own workshop in Nancy (1924). He designed numerous pieces of furniture, from 1947 produced in his own factory. Prouvé's works are characterized by the use of metal. His objects were produced in an industrial manner, inspired by the production methods of the automotive industry. In this way Prouvé created unique influential pieces - from letter openers to factory hangars. Jean Prouvé is ranked amongst the most important designer of the 20th century.
